Cuban-American mezzo-soprano Alexandra Urquiola graduated at the Yale School of Music and is a former member of San Francisco Opera’s Merola Opera Program and the Staatsoper Stuttgart’s Opernstudio. This season, she returned to the Teatro Real, portraying Segunda Doncella and covering Néris in Cherubini’s Médée, then debuted as Mercédès in Carmen at Staatsoper Stuttgart. At Theater Aachen, she captivated audiences in the title role of Carmen and as Marchesa Melibea in Il viaggio a Reims. In prior seasons, Urquiola showcased her talent as the Alt Solistin (Johannespassion), Dinah (Trouble in Tahiti), Bradamante (Alcina), Dritte Dame (Die Zauberflöte), L’enfant (L'enfant et les sortilèges), and various other roles, all at Staatsoper Stuttgart. Her international acclaim extends to performances at Teatro Real and the Peralada Festival. A versatile artist, Alexandra excels in concert repertoire and collaborations, including premiering Clarice Assad's ELEMENTOS song cycle at the New York Festival of Song with pianist Steven Blier. Later this season, she can be seen as the Mezzo Soloist in Verdi’s Messa da Requiem at the Berlin Philharmonie.
