Biography

American mezzo-soprano Helene Schneiderman studied at Westminster Choir College, Princeton, before completing a Master of Music in Voice Performance at the University of Cincinnati College of Music. She is a former member of the Heidelberg Opera Ensemble (1984–2022) and of Staatstheater Stuttgart, where she was made an honorary member. She was awarded the title of Kammersängerin from the City of Stuttgart in 1998. For The Royal Opera she has appeared in The Nose and as Marcellina (The Marriage of Figaro), Aninna (Der Rosenkavalier), Despina (Così fan tutte), Suzuki (Madama Butterfly) and the Mayor’s Wife (Jenůfa). Elsewhere she has appeared at the Bayerische Staatsoper, Vienna State Opera, Glyndebourne Festival Opera, Teatro Real, Madrid, La Scala, Milan, Metropolitan Opera, Santa Fe Opera and Canadian Opera Company, as well as at the Heidelberg, Rossini and Salzburg festivals. Recent engagements include Ericlea (Il ritorno d'Ulisse in patria) at Vienna State Opera, Susie (A Quiet Place) at Paris Opera, Barrie Kosky's All-Singing, All-Dancing Yiddish Revue at Komische Oper Berlin, Madame Larina (Eugene Onegin) at Teatro Massimo, Palermo, Old Lady (Candide) at Theater an der Wien and Teresa (La sonnambula) at Staatsoper Stuttgart. Conductors with whom she has worked include Bernard Haitink, Leonard Bernstein, Dennis Russell Davies, Giuseppe Patané, Georg Solti and Alberto Zedda.
