Remembering David Gowland (1963-2026)

The Royal Opera is deeply saddened by the death of David Gowland, at the age of 63. He was Artistic Director of the Jette Parker Artists Programme since its inception in 2001.

David was born in Stockport in 1963, and began learning the piano aged four, taught by his mother. They moved frequently, with David’s primary education taking him from Llanfrothen in North Wales to Cheshire, Stirling and Inverkip. He continued his secondary education at the comprehensive Ellon Academy, north of Aberdeen, where, alongside lessons on the organ, violin, harpsichord and in conducting, he took up the clarinet, gaining his grade 8 with distinction just three years later, aged 15. Prior to enrolling at the Royal College of Music in 1980, he played Principal Clarinet with the National Youth Orchestra of Scotland. He also played the piano in a televised BBC Prom of Stravinsky’s Petrushka with the National Youth Orchestra. 

At the RCM, David studied piano with John Barstow, flourishing as a collaborative pianist. He was naturally drawn towards opera, where he was able to combine his aptitude for languages with his skills as an accompanist and his knowledge of orchestral life, including continuo playing. After graduating, he joined the National Opera Studio in 1984, after which, in his own words, he was ‘serendipitously thrown onto the international circuit, aged 23’.  

David’s association with The Royal Opera began with a last-minute stint as a répétiteur on a production of Massenet’s Werther in 1985. At the age of 25, he was appointed Head of Music at the Grand Théâtre de Genève – a post he held for seven years. He combined his work in Switzerland with coaching for the Aix-en-Provence Festival and Glyndebourne Festival, where he worked as a vocal coach for 20 years. 

In 2001, he was invited to join the music staff at the Royal Opera House by future Music Director of The Royal Opera, Antonio Pappano and the then-Head of Music, David Syrus. Gowland refused the offer, but with a caveat: he had heard a rumour that Director of Opera, Elaine Padmore was setting up a new training scheme in Covent Garden. Recalling that moment, David responded to Tony [Pappano]: ‘If you're starting up a young artists programme, I think there needs to be one person with whom the buck stops. One person looking after them, fighting their corner and preparing them for the roles they'll do on stage. That is the only role that interests me.’ That evening, the message came from Pappano: ‘Tell him, if that’s the job he wants, it’s his.’ 

As the Artistic Director of what is now the Jette Parker Artists Programme from its foundation in 2001 until 2026, David was instrumental in nurturing the careers of over 150 singers, conductors, directors and répétiteurs. He had a rare gift for spotting star quality, often going for ‘the underdog’, and prioritising artists who showed raw potential, rather than perfectly polished technique. A gifted linguist, he spoke fluent French, conversational German, Italian and Spanish, and was adept at coaching repertoire in all these languages, as well as in Czech and Russian. Alongside his work at Covent Garden, he travelled widely with the Programme, coaching artists across Europe, Latin America, Sri Lanka, Australasia and Asia. He continued to work through his illness, coaching artists until his final weeks: including supporting on the 2026 Summer Performance. He passed away peacefully on Sunday 9 August 2026 after a long, stoic battle with cancer.
