If you’re curious about how productions come to life — from lights and sound to scenery and stage machinery — this is an excellent starting point. These roles suit young people who enjoy practical, hands-on work, problem solving, learning to use technical equipment and being part of a busy backstage team. Ideal for those with previous backstage experience at school, college or in amateur theatre who are not considering a technical theatre degree.
This one-year, Level 2 apprenticeship is perfect for someone who enjoys meeting new people and providing great customer service. If you’re friendly, confident and like helping visitors make their experience special — from selling programmes and souvenirs to answering questions — this role will suit you well. A great fit for someone who enjoys working in a customer-focused environment in our beautiful destination shop. This Apprenticeship is open for applicants aged 17.
This role may be well-suited to individuals with a strong interest in storytelling, history and organisational work. Ideal for a young person who enjoys research, careful handling of materials and discovering how the past shapes the present. You’ll work behind the scenes helping to preserve the artistic legacy of the The Royal Ballet and The Royal Opera.
This apprenticeship is perfect for someone who enjoys making, building and working with tools. If you’re interested in engineering, craftsmanship or constructing things from scratch, you’ll find this hands-on workshop environment exciting and rewarding. Ideal for those who learn best by doing and want to develop specialist skills used in creating stage sets.
A great fit for someone who enjoys working with people — especially children and young people — and wants to help make the arts accessible to all. If you’re friendly, organised and passionate about creativity, this role will suit you well. You’ll support workshops, events and community projects that share the joy of dance, music and performance.
While an interest or background in dance or music is welcome, this apprenticeship is for those interested in a career as an arts facilitator, not performers.
If you love music, this role offers an exciting way to support the work of a major orchestra. Perfect for someone who is organised, calm under pressure and confident coordinating details. You’ll support rehearsals and performances by ensuring the orchestra pit is set up on time and responding to the needs of musicians during live performances.
This role follows the Live Event Technician pathway of the Creative Industries Production Technician Apprenticeship. It is not suitable for those exploring a career as a musician or sound engineer.
Ideal for someone who is organised, proactive and enjoys helping teams operate efficiently. If you’re confident with communication, planning and learning new systems, this role offers a strong foundation for an office-based career. You’ll contribute to the smooth running of a large arts organisation and its building.
Applications will open soon. Please visit our Current Vacancies page to apply when recruitment goes live.

Why an apprenticeship
Why Level 3 Apprenticeships Are a Great Start in the Arts
Creative careers are built on experience. Level 3 apprenticeships allow young people to train directly with skilled technicians, makers and administrators while developing their abilities in real workplace situations.
Many talented young people choose not to go to university — or are unable to for financial, personal, or practical reasons. Level 3 apprenticeships offer a supportive alternative, designed specifically for people at the very beginning of their journey.
Apprentices receive structured training, one-to-one guidance and opportunities to build confidence in a supportive environment. These apprenticeships help develop the discipline, teamwork and problem-solving skills needed for a successful future in the arts and beyond.
On completion, apprentices may progress into full-time employment, move on to higher or specialist apprenticeships, or continue their training in related industries. It’s a flexible starting point that keeps future options open while offering clear career progression.
Additional information
The Royal Ballet and Opera does not run design-based apprenticeships. We know many young people are interested in design careers; however, our apprenticeships are not design-based and are not suitable for those seeking experience in costume, set, or production design. Our Level 3 apprenticeships focus on practical, workplace-based technical and operational roles.
Our Costume Maker Apprenticeship is always very popular, but we will not be recruiting for this role this year. The next opportunity is expected to open for a September 2027 start. Please revisit this page in early 2027 for the latest information.
