Booking is now open for the Royal Opera House’s much-anticipated Autumn Season – offering brand-new opera productions of Aida and Alcina, and world premieres by Crystal Pite, Pam Tanowitz, Joseph Toonga and Valentino Zucchetti. Tickets for Main Stage performances run from as little as £4, and a third of those available are under £50.

From The Royal Opera come four major new productions. On the Main Stage, Robert Carsen’s Aida is conducted by Antonio Pappano in his 20th year as Music Director; and Richard Jones’s Alcina, conducted by Baroque specialist Christian Curnyn, stars acclaimed soprano Lisette Oropesa and mezzo-soprano Emily D’Angelo. In the Linbury Theatre, Matt Copson and Anna Morrissey direct Last Days – a world premiere composed by Royal Opera House/ Guildhall School Composer-in-Residence Oliver Leith and adapted from Gus Van Sant's cult 2005 film. And Director of The Royal Opera Oliver Mears stages a shattering new production of Benjamin Britten’s The Rape of Lucretia, which sees Corinna Niemeyer make her House debut conducting a cast drawn from the Jette Parker Artists and Britten Pears Young Artists Programmes.

The Royal Ballet’s Season opens with a similarly stellar line-up. In October, multi-award-winning choreographer Crystal Pite returns to the Main Stage with a world premiere, transforming her powerful exploration of the refugee crisis, Flight Pattern, into a full-length ballet. In November, the Company celebrates 60 years of the Friends of Covent Garden with The Royal Ballet: A Diamond Celebration: an evening that promises, among other works, world premieres by Pam Tanowitz, Royal Ballet Emerging Choreographer Joseph Toonga, and First Soloist Valentino Zucchetti. And in December, Ben Duke’s Lost Dog presents a world premiere in the Linbury Theatre, co-produced with The Royal Ballet and designed as an entertaining and inventive alternative for the festive season.

Audience favourites from both Companies return. The Season opens with Mozart’s Don Giovanni, starring Luca Micheletti in the title role. Strauss Salome is conducted by Alexander Soddy, who makes his House debut; and Puccini’s Madama Butterfly returns in the autumn with Maria Agresta and Lianna Haroutounian as Cio-Cio-San.  A stunning line-up of international and British talent perform in two other beloved Puccini operas: Juan Diego Flórez, Ailyn Pérez and Danielle de Niese in Richard Jones’ production of La bohème, conducted by – among others – Kevin John Edusei; and Malin Byström, Natalya Romaniw, Gwyn Hughes Jones and Freddie De Tommaso in Jonathan Kent’s production of Tosca In the Linbury, the newest members of the Jette Parker Artists Programme – Canadian soprano Sarah Dufresne, Lithuanian mezzo-soprano Gabrielė Kupšytė, Scottish tenor Michael Gibson and Korean baritone Josef Jeongmeen Ahn – perform a selection of their favourite songs and arias in Meet the Jette Parker Artists

In October, The Royal Ballet perform Kenneth MacMillan’s Mayerling, marking 30 years since the choreographer’s death. In the Linbury Theatre, Ballet Black celebrate their 20th anniversary with a mixed programme: Black Sun, by acclaimed South African choreographer Gregory Maqoma, and Say It Loud, by the Company’s Founder and Artistic Director Cassa Pancho. Northern Ballet perform their adaptation of Hans Christian Anderson’s fairytale, Ugly Duckling, suitable for ages 3+. And in December, Peter Wright’s spectacular production of The Nutcracker returns – a family favourite of lasting magic, set to Tchaikovsky’s irresistible score.

These productions open a truly celebratory Season showcasing the exceptional talents of both visiting and resident companies. Prices start at just £4, and thousands of £25 tickets are available across the Season through our free Young ROH scheme.
