Biography

He studied at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and with Hans Hotter. Originally a baritone, he made his tenor debut in 1992. Highlights include Gandhi (Satyagraha) for English National Opera and the Metropolitan Opera, Valzacchi (Der Rosenkavalier), Don Basilio (Le nozze di Figaro), Prince/Manservant/Marquis (Lulu), Caliban (Adès’ The Tempest) and Vitek  (The Makropulos Case) for the Metropolitan Opera, Shepherd (Oedipe), Father Confessor (Dialogues des Carmélites), Tinca (Il tabarro), Gherardo (Gianni Schicchi), J. Howard Marshall II (Anna Nicole) and Hiereus (The Minotaur) for The Royal Opera and Peter Grimes  for Opéra de Lyon and the Aldeburgh Festival. Other appearances include Captain Vere (Billy Budd) for Teatro Carlo Felice, Opera North and Aldeburgh, Rookie (The Skating Rink)  for Garsington Opera, Skuratov (From the House of the Dead), Major (Elena Langer’s Figaro Gets A Divorce) and Count Hauk-Šendorf (The Makropulos Case) for Welsh National Opera,  Fatty (Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny) for Dutch National Opera and Mosquito (The Cunning Little Vixen), John Styx (Orpheus in the Underworld), Doctor (The Handmaid’s Tale) and Prologue (The Turn of the Screw) for ENO. Engagements for 2025/26 include The Makropulos Case in concert with the LSO.
