Born in Hamburg, he read American and German studies, theory of education and art history at Hamburg University and earned an interdisciplinary PhD. He has worked with Stefan Herheim for over 25 years, including on Parsifal (Bayreuth Festival), La bohème and La Cenerentola (Oslo), La forza del destino and Lohengrin (Staatsoper Berlin), Pique Dame and Les vêpres siciliennes (The Royal Opera), Pelléas et Mélisande (Glyndebourne Festival), Lulu (Copenhagen), Eugene Onegin (Amsterdam), Salome (Salzburg Easter Festival, Copenhagen), Le nozze di Figaro (Hamburg), Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg (Salzburg Festival and Paris), Serse (Komische Oper Berlin, Düsseldorf), Der Ring des Nibelungen (Deutsche Oper Berlin) and Peter Grimes (Munich). He also works with Karoline Gruber, including on The Gambler (Vienna State Opera) and Eva-Maria Höckmayr, including on Mefistofele (Dresden). He was Assistant Professor of American Studies at Hamburg University and worked briefly as chief dramaturg at the Aalto Theatre, Essen. He now teaches dramaturgy and cultural history at different universities, is consultant to the Hamburg Symphony, chief dramaturg of the Lausitz Festival and works freelance as a dramaturg and curator.
