Biography

Born in Oxford, British conductor Alexander Soddy studied at the Royal Academy of Music, the University of Cambridge and the National Opera Studio in London. From 2016-22 he was General Music Director of the Nationaltheater Mannheim and Artistic Director of the house’s Akademiekonzerte series. His other positions have included Chief Conductor at the Stadttheater Klagenfurt (2013–16) and Kapellmeister at the Hamburg State Opera (2010–12). 2025/26 highlights include Così fan tutte and the Ring cycle for Teatro alla Scala, Elektra, Der Rosenkavalier and Raskatov’s Animal Farm for Vienna State Opera, Samson et Dalila for Staatsoper Berlin and Macbeth for the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino. Other recent highlights include conducting the Saito Kinen Orchestra at the Seiji Ozawa Matsumoto Festival, Aida and La bohème at the Metropolitan Opera and Elektra at the Deutsche Oper Berlin. Previous productions for The Royal Opera include Fidelio, Così fan tutte and Salome.
