Biography

Andreas Schager studied at the University for Music in Vienna. He began his career in operetta and Mozart repertory before moving into Wagner and Strauss. Since his breakthrough performances as Siegfried (Götterdämmerung) under Daniel Barenboim at Staatsoper Berlin, the 2013 BBC Proms and La Scala, Milan, Schager has appeared worldwide, including at the Metropolitan Opera, Paris Opera, Vienna State Opera, La Scala, Milan and the Bayreuth Festival. Recent engagements include Tristan (Tristan und Isolde) for the Bayreuth Festival, the title role in Parsifal, Florestan (Fidelio), Bacchus (Ariadne auf Naxos) and Emperor (Die Frau ohne Schatten) for Staatsoper Berlin, the title role in Tannhäuser for the Metropolitan Opera, the title role in Otello, Emperor and Siegmund (Die Walküre) for Vienna State Opera and Midas (Die Liebe der Danae) for Bayerische Staatsoper. In 2025 he was named Kammersänger of the Vienna State Opera. Engagements for 2025/26 include Siegfried (Paris Opera, Staatsoper Berlin, Vienna State Opera) and the title role in Rienzi and Parsifal (Bayreuth Festival). He makes his debut with The Royal Opera in the 2025/26 Season in the title role of Siegfried.
