Born in Milan, with training at La Scala, Carlo Rizzi is Music Director of Opera Rara and Conductor Laureate of Welsh National Opera, following his tenure as Music Director (1992–2001, 2004–08). He holds long-standing relationships with theatres and festivals worldwide including the Metropolitan Opera, Teatro Real, Madrid, Rossini Opera Festival, Netherlands Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, New National Theatre Tokyo, Zurich Opera and La Monnaie, Brussels. In 2024 he was awarded the honour of ‘Grande Ufficiale dell’Ordine della Stella d’Italia’. Engagements for 2024/25 include Respighi’s La fiamma at Deutsche Oper Berlin, Il trittico at Paris Opera, Rigoletto and Turandot at Vienna State Opera and La bohème at Bayerische Staatsoper, performances with the National Symphony of Ireland and the Orquesta Simfonica de Galicia, and the continuation of Opera Rara’s complete edition of Donizetti’s songs, accompanying singers including Lawrence Brownlee, Michael Spyres and Ermonela Jaho.
