Biography

A British mezzo-soprano, she has sung Marthe Schwertlein (Faust), Governess (Queen of Spades), Mayor’s Wife (Jenůfa), Aksinya (Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk) and Háta (The Bartered Bride) for The Royal Opera. She sings regularly for Vienna State Opera, where her roles have included Herodias, Mary (Der fliegende Holländer), Gertrude (Roméo et Juliette), Annina (Der Rosenkavalier), Adelaide (Arabella) and Berta (Il barbiere di Siviglia), and for La Monnaie, Brussels, in roles including Mrs Lovett (Sweeney Todd), Ježibaba (Rusalka) and Grandmother Buryja (Jenůfa). Other recent appearances include Auntie in Peter Grimes (Monte-Carlo, Deutsche Oper am Rhein), Aksinya (Bavarian State Opera, La Scala, Paris Opéra, Teatro Real, Madrid), Bobylikha in Snegurochka (Paris Opéra), Annina in Der Rosenkavalier (Dutch National Opera, Baden Baden) and Witch in Hansel and Gretel (Opéra national de Lorraine). Plans include Adelaide in Arabella (Oviedo); Filipyevna in Eugene Onegin (Hamburg) and Babarikha in The Tale of Tsar Saltan (Teatro Real). In the 2024/25 Season she appears as Witch (Hansel and Gretel).
