Biography

British tenor David Butt Philip was a member of the Jette Parker Young Artists Programme (2012–14). He trained as a baritone at the Royal Northern College of Music and the Royal Academy of Music. He later retrained as a tenor after performing for the Glyndebourne Festival in 2010, and subsequently became a Jerwood Young Artist in 2011, where he won the John Christie Award. Recent highlights include his company and role debut as Siegmund (Die Walküre) in David McVicar’s new Ring cycle for La Scala, Milan, Florestan (Fidelio) for Vienna State Opera, Bacchus (Ariadne auf Naxos) for the Glyndebourne Festival,  Prince (Rusalka) for Royal Swedish Opera, Apollo (Daphne) for Seattle Opera, Florestan for the Metropolitan Opera and for his debut at Semperoper Dresden, the title role in Lohengrin for Vienna State Opera and the title role in Der Zwerg and Kaiser (Die Frau ohne Schatten) for Deutsche Oper Berlin. Engagements for 2026/27 include Licinius (La Vestale) with Staatsoper unter den Linten, Lohengrin at Palau de les Arts Reina Sofia, Florestan for Vienna State Opera and Der Kaiser with the Cleveland Orchestra.
