Romanian baritone George Petean was born in Cluj-Napoca and was a member of Staatsoper Hamburg (2002–10). His repertory includes Carlo Gerard in Andrea Chenier (Bayerische Staatsoper, Vienna State Opera, Zurich Opera), Tonio in Pagliacci (Vienna, Zurich, Hamburg), Guy de Montfort in Les Vêpres siciliennes (Munich), Riccardo Forth in I puritani (Zurich, Teatro Real, Madrid), Ernesto in Il Pirata (Madrid), Georgio Germont in La traviata (Metropolitan Opera, Munich), Ezio in Attila (La Scala, Milan, Opéra de Monte-Carlo), Nabucco (Amsterdam, Arena di Verona) and Iago in Otello (Madrid, Semperoper Dresden). Recent engagements include Count di Luna in Il trovatore (San Francisco, Munich, Hamburg, Berlin), Simon Boccanegra (Zurich, Vienna, Staatsoper Berlin), Don Carlo (Munich, Berlin) and Un Ballo in maschera (Zurich). His roles for The Royal Opera include Silvio, Rossini's Figaro, Giorgio Germont and Marcello. Engagements for 2025/26 include La forza del destino in Zurich, Il trovatore in Madrid, Simon Boccanegra in Tokyo and Amsterdam and Luisa Miller in Vienna.
