Biography

Born in Montreal, he studied at King’s College, Cambridge, the RCM and the National Opera Studio. He created the roles of Harry Heegan in The Silver Tassie (ENO), J. Robert Oppenheimer in Doctor Atomic (San Francisco, Amsterdam, Chicago, Metropolitan Opera, ENO) and Stern in Anna Nicole (ROH). Other Royal Opera roles include Wolfram von Eschenbach (Tannhäuser), Iago (Japan tour), Scarpia, Michonnet (Adriana Lecouvreur), Guillaume Tell, Amfortas, Don Giovanni, Count Almaviva, Forester (The Cunning Little Vixen), Giorgio Germont, Prince Yeletsky, Eugene Onegin and Frank/Fritz (Die tote Stadt). Appearances elsewhere include Anthony in the world premiere of Anthony and Cleopatra (San Francisco Opera, Liceu, Barcelona); Hans Sachs in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg (Teatro Real, Madrid), Scarpia and Count Almaviva (Paris Opera), Iago (Bayerische Staatsoper), the title role of Bluebeard’s Castle and Count Almaviva (Metropolitan Opera) and Falstaff (Vienna State Opera). Recordings include Guillaume Tell (EMI) and songs by Britten, Barber, Ives, Schubert, Liszt and Schumann (Hyperion). Plans include the title roles of Macbeth (Vienna State Opera, Bayerische Staatsoper) and Der fliegende Holländer (Bayerische Staatsoper) and Anthony and Cleopatra (Metropolitan Opera).
