Hanna Schwarz made her Bayreuth Festival debut in 1975 as Fricka in the Patrice Chéreau/Pierre Boulez Ring cycle, later establishing herself at opera houses worldwide. For her interpretation of Klytämnestra (Elektra) she was named ‘Singer of the Year’ in 1997 by German magazine Opernwelt. In concert she has sung Schönberg’s Gurrelieder, Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde and Beethoven’s Symphony no.9 and Missa solemnis. Her various recordings include the Chérau/Boulez Ring cycle in Bayreuth (1980), Die Frau ohne Schatten under Wolfgang Sawallisch (1988) and Elektra under Giuseppe Sinopoli (1997), among many others. She is also a longtime interpreter of contemporary work, and has collaborated with composers including Hans Werner Henze, Mauricio Kagel, Pierre Boulez, Alfred Schnittke, Peter Eötvös and Leonard Bernstein. Engagements for 2024/25 include Erda in a new Ring cycle in Basel and Suor Angelica at Paris Opera (Bastille).
