Biography
A Russian-US designer and costume-maker, she left Russia in 1928 and worked as a seamstress in Paris, executing designs by Dalí, Matisse and Beaton, among others. In 1930 she went to the USA, working in Hollywood and in New York, then in 1949 designing her first ballet costumes, for George Balanchine’s Bourrée fantasque. She went on to become NYCB’s leading costume designer and maker, designing the costumes for Balanchine’s productions of The Nutcracker and Jewels, among others. She died in 1983.
