Biography
Swedish soprano Malin Byström made her Royal Opera debut in 2002 as Amalia (I masnadieri) and has since sung Marguerite (Faust), Fiordiligi (Così fan tutte), Donna Anna (Don Giovanni), Elettra (Idomeneo), Mathilde (Guillaume Tell), Hélène (Les Vêpres siciliennes) and Salome for The Royal Opera. In the 2019/20 Season she reprises the role of Donna Anna.
Byström studied at the University College of Opera, Stockholm. Selected engagements include Marguerite, Donna Anna, Donna Elvira (Don Giovanni) and the title role of Arabella for the Metropolitan Opera, New York, Donna Anna at the Salzburg Festival, Salome for Dutch National Opera, the Marschallin (Der Rosenkavalier), Donna Elvira, the title role of Fedora and the title role of Jenufa for Royal Swedish Opera, Leonore (Fidelio) in Malmö, Jenufa for San Francisco Opera, Floria Tosca (Tosca) in Frankfurt and Countess Madeleine (Capriccio) for Teatro Real, Madrid. Opera concert performances include Mathilde under Antonio Pappano with the Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome and at the BBC Proms.
Byström has performed throughout Sweden and Europe in concert, her repertory including Beethoven’s Symphony no.9 and Missa solemnis, Mendelssohn’s Elijah, Grieg’s Peer Gynt, Strauss’s Vier letzte Lieder and Sibelius’s Kullervo, with such conductors as Herbert Blomstedt, Kurt Masur, Antonio Pappano, Lawrence Renes and Ralf Weikert.
