Biography

British-Spanish mezzo-soprano Marta Fontanals-Simmons’s previous roles for The Royal Opera include Linda (Festen), Siébel (Faust) and Hel (The Monstrous Child, world premiere). Engagements elsewhere have included Marta (Francisco Coll’s Enemigo del Pueblo) at Les Arts Valencia and Teatro Real Madrid, Vlasta (The Passenger) at Teatro Real, Madrid, Jennie Hildebrand (Street Scene) at Opéra de Monte-Carlo, Eurydice Woman (The Mask of Orpheus) at English National Opera, Amando (Le Grand Macabre) at the Elbphilharmonie, Marta (Anna, world premiere) at The Grange Festival, Matriosha (War and Peace) and First Maid (Elektra) at Grand Théâtre de Genève, Jacquet (The Wreckers), Second Lady (The Magic Flute) and Lapak (The Cunning Little Vixen) at the Glyndebourne Festival and Cherubino (Le nozze di Figaro) for Garsington Opera and Théâtre des Champs-Élysées. Concert engagements include Verdi’s Requiem (Philharmonia), Gavin Higgins’ The Faerie Bride (world premiere, BBC NOW), Elgar’s Sea Pictures and Handel’s Messiah (Royal Philharmonic Orchestra), and Vaughan Williams’ Serenade to Music (Last Night of the BBC Proms).
