Biography

Masabane Cecilia Rangwanasha won the Song Prize at the 2021 BBC Cardiff Singer of the World Competition and the 2024 Herbert von Karajan Prize. Recent engagements include Beethoven’s Symphony no.9 (Munich Philharmonic Orchestra), Poulenc’s Stabat Mater (Teatro Regio), Strauss’ Vier letzte Lieder (Cincinnati SO) and Tippett’s A Child of Our Time (Royal Sinfonia and London Symphony Orchestra). Other engagements include her house debuts with Washington National Opera and Hamburg State Opera as Liù (also with The Royal Opera on tour to Japan) in Turandot, Mendelssohn’s Elijah (LSO and Chicago SO), Verdi’s Requiem (Atlanta SO, Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia and Salzburg Easter Festival), Mathilde in Guillaume Tell and the title role in Iphigénie en Tauride (Theater Bern). Engagements for 2025/26 include her Metropolitan Opera debut as Liù, Mahler’s Symphony no.4 (Los Angeles Philharmonic), Vier letzte Lieder (Philharmonia, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra), Vaughan Williams’ A Sea Symphony (LPO), Dvořák’s Stabat Mater (National Symphony Orchestra Ireland) and the Countess in concert with the Orchestre Symphonique de Montreal. In the 2025/26 Royal Opera Season she sings the Countess in The Marriage of Figaro.
