Swedish soprano Nina Stemme made her Royal Opera debut in 2005 as Amelia (Un ballo in maschera). She has since sung Isolde (Tristan und Isolde), for which she won an Olivier Award, Leonore (Fidelio), Brünnhilde (Der Ring des Nibelungen), and Elektra.
Stemme is a regular guest at opera houses worldwide, including at the Metropolitan Opera, La Scala, Milan, Vienna State Opera, Royal Opera House and the Bayreuth Festival. Notable roles have included Cherubino (Le nozze di Figaro) in Cortona; Pamina (The Magic Flute), Countess Almaviva (Le nozze di Figaro) and Mimì (La bohème) for Cologne Opera; Cio-Cio San (Madama Butterfly) for Royal Opera Stockholm; Elisabeth (Tannhäuser) and Senta (The Flying Dutchman) for the Bayreuth Festival; and Marschallin (Der Rosenkavalier) for Gothenburg Opera.
Her dramatic roles include Isolde (Tristan und Isolde) for the Metropolitan Opera and the Glyndebourne Festival, Brünnhilde (Siegfried) for La Scala, Milan and San Francisco Opera, Kundry (Parsifal) and the title roles of Salome and Elektra for Vienna State Opera and the title role of Turandot for Royal Opera Stockholm. Her 2023/24 Season engagements include Jenůfa for Lyric Opera of Chicago, Elektra for Baden-Baden, Tristan und Isolde for Teatro Massimo, Palermo and Parsifal for Bayerische Staatsoper.
Stemme’s many recordings include CDs of Tristan und Isolde for EMI with Plácido Domingo, The Greek Passion, Der König Kandaules, Der fliegende Holländer, Strauss scenes and his Vier letzte Lieder, and DVDs of Tristan und Isolde, Der Rosenkavalier, Aida and Jenufa. She performed at the 2017 Last Night of the BBC Proms. She is a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Music and a Kammersängerin of Vienna State Opera. She is the 2018 recipient of the Birgit Nilsson Prize.
