Biography

Born in South Wales she studied at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama. She was awarded a CBE in the 2020 Queen’s Birthday Honours. Highlights include the title role of Rodelinda for English National Opera, Marschallin (Der Rosenkavalier), Despina (Così fan tutte) and Nerys Price in the world premiere of Blaze of Glory! for Welsh National Opera, her Teatro Real, Madrid debut as Alice Ford (Falstaff) and Hécube in a European tour of Les Troyens with the Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique. For The Royal Opera she has sung Countess Almaviva (Le nozze di Figaro), Mimì (La bohème), Pamina (Die Zauberflöte), Zerlina (Don Giovanni) and Despina. Engagements elsewhere include Ginevra (Ariodante), Despina, Ilia (Idomeneo) and Susanna (Le nozze di Figaro) for Bayerische Staaatsoper; Susanna for Santa Fe Opera; Despina for Staatsoper Berlin; Governess (The Turn of the Screw), Romilda (Xerxes) and Ginevra for ENO; Susanna and Zerlina for the Metropolitan Opera; Pamina and Adèle (Die Fledermaus) for Lyric Opera of Chicago and Zerlina, Anne Trulove (The Rake’s Progress) and Adina (L’elisir d’amore) for San Francisco Opera. She is a Grammy Award winner, and has collaborated with Charles Mackerras, David Parry, Brad Cohen and John Eliot Gardiner.
