Biography

Bulgarian soprano Sonya Yoncheva made her Royal Opera debut in Plácido Domingo’s Operalia Winners concert in July 2012, and has since sung Musetta (La bohème), Marguerite (Faust), Violetta Valéry (La traviata), Micaëla (Carmen), Norma, Antonia (Les Contes d’Hoffmann), Mimì (La bohème) and in the Life Reimagined Gala.

Yoncheva studied piano and voice in Plovdiv and singing at the Geneva Conservatory. She was a member of William Christie’s Le Jardin des Voix and in her early career focussed on Early and Baroque repertory. More recent appearances include Desdemona (Otello), Mimì, Violetta, Floria Tosca, Luisa (Luisa Miller) and Iolanta for the Metropolitan Opera, New York, Violetta, Mimì, Tosca and Cherubini’s Medée for Berlin State Opera, Iolanta, Violetta and Elizabeth of Valois (Don Carlos) for Paris Opéra, Poppea (L’incoronazione di Poppea) for Salzburg Festival, Imogene (Il pirata) and Mimì for La Scala, Milan, Imogene for Teatro Real, Madrid, Tatyana for Deutsche Oper Berlin, Desdemona in Baden-Baden and at the Berlin Philharmonie, Stefania (Giordano’s Siberia) for Festival de Radio France and Violetta for Bavarian State Opera. 

Yoncheva’s many awards include the Special Prize of Les Amis du Festival at the 2007 Aix-en-Provence Festival, first prize in Operalia (2010), Newcomer of the Year (Singer) at the 2015 ECHO Klassik Awards and the 2019 Readers’ Award at the International Opera Awards. Selected concert appearances include galas at La Scala, Milan, the Metropolitan Opera, Paris Opéra and Vienna State Opera, Rossini’s Stabat Mater at the Philharmonie de Paris and recitals at Teatro Real, Madrid, Opéra de Monte-Carlo and the Salle Gaveau in Paris. She records exclusively for Sony Classical.
