Biography
Born in Bistrita, Romania, Stefan Pop studied at the Gheorghe Dima Music Academy in Cluj-Napoca. He made his professional debut at 21 as Nemorino (L’elisir d’amore) for the National Romanian Opera, followed by roles as Duke of Mantua (Rigoletto) for NRO, Jacopo (I due Foscari) for Teatro Regio, Parma and his first opera film, La traviata, for Classica HD at Teatro Massimo Bellini. In 2010 he won the First and Audience prizes in Plácido Domingo’s Operalia Competition at La Scala, Milan, as well as First Prize in the 6th International Music Competition in Seoul. Recent engagements include the title role of Don Carlo and Pinkerton (Madama Butterfly) for Staatsoper Berlin, Macduff (Macbeth) for Bayerische Staatsoper, Rodolfo for Tokyo Spring Festival and Don Carlo for Semperoper Dresden. Concert engagements include Verdi’s Requiem in Dresden. Previous roles for The Royal Opera include Duke of Mantua, Cavaradossi (Tosca), Foresto (Attila) and Rodolfo. His recording of Tosca was issued on Pentatone in 2023. Engagements for 2026/27 include Madama Butterfly and La traviata for Berlin Staatsoper.
