Susan Bickley



Mezzo-soprano Susan Bickley made her Royal Opera House debut in the 2010/11 Season. Roles have included Matron (The Nose), Marfa (Káťa Kabanová), Queen of Sheba (Solomon) and Virgie (Anna Nicole). Other 2023/24 Season engagements include Hecuba/Victoria (Cassandra) for La Monnaie, Brussels and Offered’s Mother (The Handmaid’s Tale) for English National Opera. Her repertory includes Genevieve (Pelléas et Mélisande), Mrs Grose (The Turn of the Screw), Kostelnicka (Jenůfa), Kabanicha (Káťa Kabanová), Waltraute (Der Ring des Nibelungen), Marcellina (Le nozze di Figaro), Herodias (Salome), Baba the Turk (The Rake’s Progress), Madre (Al gran sole carico d’amore) and Ludmilla (The Bartered Bride). She has performed at houses worldwide including at Garsington Opera, Glyndebourne Festival, Opera North, Paris Opera, Welsh National Opera, Dallas Opera, San Francisco Opera, Staatsoper Berlin and the Salzburg Festival. She was awarded the Singer Award at the 2011 Royal Philharmonic Society Awards, the highest recognition for live classical music in the UK.
