Biography

Mezzo-soprano Susan Bickley made her Royal Opera debut in the 2010/11 Season, and has returned for Matron (The Nose), Marfa (Káťa Kabanová), Queen of Sheba (Solomon), Virgie (Anna Nicole), Mother (Hansel and Gretel) and Grandma (Festen). Elsewhere she has performed at the Glyndebourne Festival, Opera North, Paris Opera, Welsh National Opera, Dallas Opera, San Francisco Opera, Staatsoper Berlin and the Salzburg Festival. Recent engagements include Hecuba/Victoria (Cassandra) for La Monnaie, Brussels and Staatsoper Berlin, Kabanicha (Káťa Kabanova) for Glyndebourne, Auntie (Peter Grimes) for Bayerische Staatsoper and Mrs Sedley (Peter Grimes) for Royal Danish Opera. Her repertory includes Genevieve (Pelléas et Mélisande), Mrs Grose (The Turn of the Screw), Kostelnička (Jenůfa), Waltraute (Der Ring des Nibelungen), Herodias (Salome), Baba the Turk (The Rake’s Progress), Madre (Al gran sole carico d’amore) and Ludmila (The Bartered Bride). Engagements for 2025/26 include her house and role debut as Else (Festen) at Finnish National Opera and a return to Garsington Opera as Miss Prism (The Importance of Being Earnest).
