Biography

Ted Huffman is a writer and director for the stage. He studied Humanities at Yale University. He was nominated at the 2022 International Opera Awards for Best Production (L’incoronazione di Poppea, Aix-en-Provence Festival) and Best World Premiere (The Time of Our Singing, La Monnaie, Brussels) and his staging of Stefan Wirth’s The Girl with the Pearl Earring for Zurich Opera won Opernwelt’s Best World Premiere of 2022. He became General Director of the Aix-en-Provence Festival in 2026. His long-standing partnership with composer Philip Venables has yielded recent work The Faggots and Their Friends Between Revolutions (Manchester International Festival, Aix-en-Provence, Bregenz, Park Avenue Armory, Southbank Centre Ruhrtriennale, Holland Festival). Other recent productions include Tosca (Glyndebourne), The Cunning Little Vixen (Staatsoper Berlin), Otello (Strasbourg), Werther (Opéra-Comique), Eugene Onegin (Royal Opera House), The Story of Billy Budd, Sailor (Aix-en-Provence) and Venables’s We Are the Lucky Ones (Dutch National Opera, Ruhrtriennale). Additional highlights include L’incoronazione di Poppea (Aix-en-Provence, Versailles, Cologne, Rennes, Toulon, Netherlands Reisopera), StreetScene (Paris Opera), Denis & Katya (Opera Philadelphia, DNO, Montpellier, Hannover, Music Theatre Wales) and 4.48 Psychosis (ROH, Strasbourg).
