Biography

Canadian-Armenian bass-baritone Vartan Gabrielian studied at the Curtis Institute of Music. He was a Finalist in the 2022 Belvedere Competition and National Semi-Finalist in the 2023 Met Laffont Competition, and has been generously supported by the Metropolitan Opera National Council, Sylva Gelber Foundation, Career Bridges Schuyler Foundation, Jacqueline Desmarais Foundation, Gerda Lissner Foundation and the George London Foundation. Recent highlights include Nick Shadow (The Rake’s Progress) for the Verbier Festival, Lo Zio Bonzo (Madama Butterfly) and Lord Gualtiero Valton (I puritani) for Paris Opera, and Fasolt (Das Rheingold) for Edmonton Opera. He has also performed as Basilio (The Barber of Seville) and Frère Laurent (Romeo and Juliet) at Opera San José. Engagements for 2025/26 include returns to Paris Opera for Figaro (Le nozze di Figaro), Zuniga (Carmen) and Angelotti (Tosca), and his Opéra de Lausanne debut as Sparafucile (Rigoletto). He makes his role and house debut at The Royal Opera in the 2025/26 Season as Robert in Les Vêpres siciliennes
