Biography

Bass Vitalij Kowaljow’s roles include Filippo II in Don Carlo, Zaccaria in Nabucco, Ramfis in Aida, Kaspar in Der Freischütz, Méphistophélès in Faust, the title role in Prince Igor, Pimen in Boris Godunov and Prince Gremin in Eugene Onegin. In 2010 he made his role and house debuts as Wotan and Der Wanderer for Los Angeles Opera, in a new Ring cycle conducted by James Conlon, and in 2011, he was invited by Daniel Barenboim to sing Wotan in Die Walküre for La Scala, Milan. Other highlights include Hunding in Die Walküre at the Bayreuth Festival, Grande Inquisitore in Don Carlo at Vienna State Opera and Pimen at Dutch National Opera. His previous roles for The Royal Opera include Ramfis in Aida, Zaccaria in Nabucco and Timur in Turandot. Engagements for 2025/26 include Timur at the Metropolitan Opera.
