Background
For more than 150 years, Covent Garden has been the artistic home of some of the greatest divas the world has ever known. On this tour, you will follow in their footsteps, discovering how these women did more than sing on this stage, reshaping opera and captivating audiences across generations.
From the brilliance of Adelina Patti, the world’s first global opera superstar, to the commanding authority of Nellie Melba; through the transformative artistry of Maria Callas and the legendary legacy of Joan Sutherland, culminating in the radiant ascent of today’s star, Angel Blue – this tour explores the evolution of the diva from the 19th century to the present day.
Explore the Royal Opera House’s iconic spaces, from grand foyers to the Opera Rehearsal Room — a working area rarely open to the public — and a dressing room styled for a diva’s opening night, complete with example costumes from historic productions. In collaboration with our archives, you’ll encounter treasured artefacts, including an exquisite necklace once worn by Joan Sutherland, alongside remarkable stories of ambition, rivalry, devotion, excess and artistic brilliance.
Every diva featured on this tour stepped onto our Covent Garden stage as Violetta in Verdi’s La traviata. From legendary debuts and standing ovations to the personal sacrifices behind voices that defined entire eras, experience the drama and glamour of opera up close.

Access
This tour takes you through different areas of the Royal Opera House, including long corridors, stairs, escalators and lifts. The flooring is also different depending on where you are in the building – some floors are smooth and tiled or wooden, some are carpeted.
Because we are a working theatre, there are areas that won’t always be available to us, which means each tour will take a different route. The spaces we travel through can sometimes be busy and loud.
Our tour guides use descriptive language which helps to paint a picture for blind and partially sighted visitors.
Please get in touch at boxoffice@roh.org.uk after booking to let us know your access requirements so we can make sure you have the best experience on your visit. We can help plan the tour if you require step-free and wheelchair access, if you prefer to avoid areas with views from a height, if you need to use the hearing loop or if you need to take regular breaks. Unfortunately, our hearing loops aren't compatible with Bluetooth.
