Background

English National Ballet School and Rambert School come together for Next Generation Festival, in a mixed programme.

English National Ballet School is a world-leading centre of dance education. With an illustrious 35-year history it provides the very best training, education, performance, and pastoral care to support its students in reaching their full potential. ENBS equips its students with the confidence, creativity, and skills needed for a career as a professional dancer with the major international companies, and for a future beyond performing. The school aims to be the first choice for the next generation of international ballet dancers irrespective of their background or ability to pay.

For this programme, ENBS presents three compelling works that highlight the spirit of the school. Artistic director Lynne Charles' Etudes on a Theme of Satie is inspired by a dancer's never-ending quest for perfection at the barre and features a guest performance by ENB Soloist Anna Nevzerova. ENBS also presents Aphiēmi, a duet co-created by Lynne Charles and two of the school's graduating dancers. Marguerite Donlon's Ruff Celts, which closes the programme, brings theatrical flair and humour to the stage, combining modern movement with Irish heritage.

Joining ENBS in this programme is Rambert School. Fuelled by innovation and creativity, Rambert School plays a key part in the professional dance sector, shaping new generations of dance professionals to the highest standard. Celebrating its centenary year in 2020, Rambert School has flexed and moved with the times. Today, the inspirational teaching and finely tuned curriculum of ballet and contemporary dance, coupled with the creative talent and individuality of students, make the school a world-leading centre for dance training. Graduates can be seen in international dance companies including Rambert, Akram Khan Company, BalletBoyz, Ballet Black, Company Wayne McGregor, Danish Dance Theatre, Hofesh Shechter Company, Matthew Bourne’s New Adventures, Nederlands Dans Theater, Phoenix Dance Theatre, Sydney Dance Company, and more.

Rambert School will perform The Inn Between, a work that delves into the complexities of decision-making and a co-creation between choreographer Julian Nichols and the dancers. Miguel Altunaga's The Hilkravrs follows, an exploration of ambition: the tension of aching for more and the weight of never being enough. Rambert School also performs Richard Alston's Waltzes in Disorder, portraying an existing relationship disturbed by a newcomer, and Faye Stoeser's Lunar Tales, inspired by the mysterious world of the night.

Latecomers will be admitted during the pause between Etudes on a Theme of Satie and The Inn Between.
