Join cast and creatives from The Royal Opera's productions of Turn of the Screw and Peter Grimes in discussion of the works by Benjamin Britten.

The tenor Allan Clayton is performing as Peter Grimes in The Royal Opera’s Peter Grimes. He is barefoot, lying on the stage dressed in dirty yellow fishing overalls, a dark blue plaid shirt and a navy beanie hat, as though he is asleep. Fishing nets are draped over his body like a blanket. Behind him a chorus of performers stands in darkness holding torches.

As Peter Grimes returns to the Main Stage and a new production of The Turn of the Screw arrives in the Linbury Theatre for Spring 2026, this special Insights event explores the themes, inspirations and characters behind Benjamin Britten's two thrilling operatic works.

Background

This spring, The Royal Opera presents two works by Benjamin Britten: The Turn of the Screw in the Linbury Theatre and Peter Grimes on the Main Stage. Discover more about the leading composer of British opera with cast and creatives from both productions.

Exploring the corrupt depths of the human psyche, Britten’s chilling adaptation of Henry James’ novella, The Turn of the Screw, comes to life in an atmospheric new staging co-created by Natalie Abrahami and Michael Levine.

Deborah Warner’s stunning and critically-acclaimed contemporary staging of Peter Grimes foregrounds the vulnerability and volatility of the shunned title character, and the tragic conflict between the individual and group.
