Ballet and dance

The dynamic ballet company returns to celebrate innovation, collaboration and the continuing evolution of British ballet.

Dancers perform Orbital Motion. They are dressed in colourful leotards and hold various poses with arms outstretched. In the centre, a dancer dressed in yellow is lifted above the heads of the other dancers and holds a pose with arms outstretched above her head.

New English Ballet Theatre presents Covent Garden Choreographics, a vibrant evening of new works and revivals by choreographers connected to The Royal Ballet and the Royal Opera House.

Background

Join New English Ballet Theatre (NEBT) for an evening of imagination and excellence – celebrating the future of ballet and the extraordinary creative talent flourishing in the heart of Covent Garden.

Embers

Drawing on the image of a lone piece of burning wood in a dying fire, Ashley Dean explores the theme of burnout in Embers. She taps into the emotions – both tender and difficult – of turning to others for support and emphasises the great strength it can take to hold someone else up. She touches on the theme of this ember never dying out; the Christian sentiment of a light shining in the darkness and not being overcome (John 1:5). The original Embers duet was created for The Royal Ballet's Draft Works in December 2022 and has now been expanded for NEBT. The piece is set to and inspired by Max Richter's poignant scores Embers and Mercy.

Celestial Bodies

Choreographer Jordan James Bridge is inspired by themes of 'the surrealism of space, capturing its mysterious and otherworldly essence. Utilizing movement as a catalyst, the choreography explores fleeting, ephemeral bodies that emerge and dissolve within the stark confines of a black box theatre.' Costumes by Stevie Stewart evoke mercury, providing a sense of fluidity, reflection, and cosmic energy. The lighting (designed by Joshie Harriett) and stage design aims to create an immersive experience that blurs the boundaries between reality and dreamscape. Through this synergy of movement, costume, and space, the work aspires to evoke a profound sense of wonder, fragility, and the infinite mysteries of the unknown.

Orbital Motion

Royal Ballet First Soloist Valentino Zucchetti originally choreographed Orbital Motion in February 2013 for The Royal Ballet’s Draft Works, an annual event which that year had the audience surrounding the stage from all angles. He has since choreographed several works for The Royal Ballet including Scherzo (2020), Anemoi (2022) and Prima (2022). Orbital Motion was devised around the idea of circular motion, which soon became inspired by the movement of planetary orbits. With director Karen Pilkington-Miksa and designer Emma Bailey, Zucchetti's original work has been expanded by NEBT.
