Paul Taylor Dance Company makes its return to Britain in over two decades with Concertiana + Echo + Esplanade

Six ballet dancers, some wear orange trousers and tshirts and others wear pink dresses, lie on the floor on their stomachs with their arms below their shoulders holding up their torso, head and neck. Above them a ballet dancer with long blonde hair and a pink dress is launched into the air with her knees folded under her body, toes pointing outwards and her arms bent at the elbow. Her hair flows upwards showing the strength of the movement in her jump.

Background

Considered as one of the great pillars of 20th-century American modern dance, the late Paul Taylor is remembered for his original and often humorous choreography. A contemporary of Martha Graham and Merce Cunningham, Paul Taylor created choreography that was experimental for its time, playing with perspective, form and process. He founded Paul Taylor Dance Company in 1954. Today, the company continues to embody and carry on his legacy, preserving his eclectic movement vocabulary.

Concertiana + Echo + Esplanade

Concertiana was Paul Taylor's final masterpiece. Set to a vibrant violin concerto by contemporary composer Eric Ewazen, the work celebrates the brilliance of Taylor's company. Concertiana balances fiery solos and duets with slower-moving groups in silhouette and evokes the full spectrum of human emotion.

This is followed by Echo, a 2023 work by Paul Taylor Dance Company’s resident choreographer Lauren Lovette. With costumes by Zac Posen and music by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Kevin Puts, Echo features all the men of the company and explores the complexities of masculinity and how it may be viewed in society.

In 1975, Taylor, inspired by the sight of a girl running to catch a bus, created a masterwork based on pedestrian movement. The resulting Esplanade is a definitive work of the choreographer, at once playful, somber, romantic and explosive.
