Background

Exciting British mezzo-soprano Stephanie Wake-Edwards plays a modern-day Ariadne in this cantata for voice and piano of Arianna a Naxos by Joseph Haydn. From an abandoned warehouse hideout, she reflects on her escape from her family and her abandonment by her lover Theseus. She is traumatised by Theseus’s inadvertent murder of her own brother and needs to decide what to do next.

The Jette Parker Young Artists Programme’s LockDown/SkillUp initiative enabled 30 emerging stage directors to get to grips with opera under the leadership of director Katie Mitchell. Three of these directors have joined forces with Jette Parker Young Artists to create a series of musical journeys captured on location at the Royal Opera House.

Travel with three female protagonists across three centuries of music from Haydn, through Poulenc to Jake Heggie in these dramas written specifically for solo voice and piano, and now brought to life by the next generation of opera makers.
