With a variety of interactive workshops, captivating performances, and behind-the-scenes tours, the Royal Ballet and Opera creates a vibrant atmosphere where children and adults alike can discover the beauty and excitement of live theatre together. Whether it's a first encounter with a timeless classic or a creative activity designed for all ages, these events bring the magic of the Royal Ballet and Opera to the whole family.

Children age five and above are permitted into our auditoria. They must have their own ticket and sit next to an accompanying adult. Some events are open to younger children, with details available on the event page. Please check for age guidance and content warnings.

This Christmas

Experience a festive wonderland at the Royal Opera House this Christmas, with The Nutcracker, hands-on children’s tours, and interactive family activities.

A Magical Christmas with the Royal Ballet and Opera

This Christmas, the Royal Opera House is a festive wonderland for families. Children can enjoy The Nutcracker, returning to the Main Stage from 22 November to 5 January, or watch the live cinema broadcast from Wednesday 10 December 2025.

For a hands-on experience, try the Children’s Nutcracker Adventure Tour (ages 5–11) which offers backstage access, a sneak peek at rehearsals, costume displays, choreography and a bespoke Nutcracker-themed gift.

Families can also explore interactive festive activities throughout the historic Paul Hamlyn Hall, including visiting The Royal Opera House Christmas Tree, designed by Paul Smith.

Discover the magic of opera and ballet at Family Sundays, with live performances, workshops, and hands-on activities for all ages.

For all the Family

Explore the Royal Opera House, its artists and the world of opera and ballet in a fun relaxed environment. With bean bags, and plenty of space for your family to enjoy live music and dance, each Family Sunday is packed with creative and practical activities for all the family. Activities include: 

- Informal performances from Royal Ballet dancers, Jette Parker Artists and musicians 

- Interactive singing or dance workshops 

- Live theatrecraft or stage combat demonstrations 

- Upcycling activities

Activities are designed for families with children aged three to ten in mind, but there’s something for everyone at Family Sundays.

Enjoy family-friendly performances at the Royal Opera House, with relaxed environments and sensory-adapted options for all ages.

Everyone's welcome

In addition to our shows and events suitable for children and families we also have specific family friendly performances. These are relaxed environment performances, and audience members can leave and return as needed. While we may make some minor adjustments, we recommend our sensory adapted performances for those with additional sensory needs. ‎
