Uncover Royal Ballet Heritage
This mixed programme presents three essential works from The Royal Ballet’s rich heritage: Concerto by Principal Choreographer Kenneth MacMillan, A Month in the Country by Founder Choreographer Frederick Ashton and Rudolf Nureyev’s production of Raymonda Act III by Marius Petipa.
Concerto
Resplendent and blazing bright, Kenneth MacMillan’s Concerto opens the mixed programme. This non-narrative 1966 ballet from The Royal Ballet’s Principal Choreographer is set to Dmitri Shostakovich’s evocative second piano concerto, at turns both exuberant and languorous. One of MacMillan’s first creations during his time as director of Deutsche Oper Ballet, Concerto features luminous minimalist designs by Jürgen Rose.
A Month in the Country
In A Month in the Country, Founder Choreographer Frederick Ashton reimagines Ivan Turgenev’s play of the same name. Danced to intimate piano music by Chopin and against beautiful period designs by Julia Trevelyan Oman, Frederick Ashton’s elegant ballet from 1976 depicts the drama of a household disrupted and the longing of love unfulfilled.
Raymonda Act III
Majestically exemplifying the power of the ensemble, Rudolf Nureyev’s Raymonda Act III was created for the Royal Ballet Touring Company in 1966. A monumental figure in ballet, Nureyev had always held this classic ballet by Marius Petipa close to his heart – and this one-act version is largely reminiscent of the choreography he had grown familiar with from his early dancing years in Russia. Raymonda Act III is a magnificent demonstration of solo and group virtuosity, with a ravishing score by Alexander Glazunov and opulent designs by Barry Kay.
Accessibility and resources
There is lift access and there are step-free routes to over 100 seats in the Stalls Circle, Balcony and Amphitheatre. Some seats in the Stalls Circle, Balcony, Amphitheatre and the Donald Gordon Grand Tier are accessed by 9 steps or fewer. There are 10 steps or more to access seats in the Orchestra Stalls.
