This autumn, German director Philipp Stölzl makes his Royal Opera debut with an inventive new production of Verdi’s political and personal intrigue, Un ballo in maschera. For this special Insight, join cast and creatives in conversation as they discuss the inspirations behind and their preparation for this stirring staging.
Verdi’s Un ballo in maschera (A Masked Ball) draws loosely from real historical events, recounting the story of Sweden’s King Gustav III (1746–1792), his assassination at the hands of aggrieved nobleman Jacob Johan Anckarström and the fortune-teller Madame Ulrica Arvidsson, who allegedly predicted the king’s tragic fate.
